Folks sometimes ask “What’s the proper tip for the 1st Mate?” Generally speaking when you go to a restaurant you spend 1-2 hours enjoying a good meal and you leave a 15% tip for the waitress who did a good job waiting on your table. (Total time in your presence 10 minutes max!) Here, the mates spend many hours with you on your day off making your entire trip as nice as possible. 15% seems barely an acknowledgement for their time. Try to be generous, they won’t forget you next time they see you with a fishing rod in your hands. That comes from a guy who put 30 seasons on deck and still looks forward to the season ahead. |
